Project Committee

Eva Scarfe (Australia)

  • PBI El Salvador Team Member, 1988-90.
  • Accompaniment of Guatemalan Refugees in Mexico, 1991-1992.
  • Accompaniment of CPR-Ixcan, 1993-98.
  • Facilitated workshops with Guatemalan refugees and with the CPRs in the Ixcan.
  • PBI Colombia Team Member, 2000-01.
  • Member of PBI Exploratory Delegation to Guatemala 2001.
  • Worked for the Diocesis in the Ixcan and representing PBI in Guatemala 2002.

Montse Garcia Blas (Spain)

Amaya de Miguel Vallés (Spain)

  • lived in Guatemala from June 1997 to March 2005.
  • Volunteer promoter with PRODESSA (Development Project Santiago) in Huehuetenango, 1997.
  • Systematisation and introduction of cases of human rights violations in the database of the Historic Clarification Commission (CEH), 1998.
  • Investigator for two studies published by the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO), 1999.
  • Investigator for the consultation “Mechanisms of Consultation of Indigenous People” carried out by the Institute of Political, Economical and Social Studies (IPES), 2000.
  • Coordinator of the Project of International Accompaniment ACOGUATE (2000-2005).
  • Specialisation in Gender Studies (Foundation Guatemala and Autonomous University of Mexico), 2004-2005.

Giovanna Teijido Vázquez (Spain)

  • has collaborated with organizations like Centre for the Assistance of Immigrants, Oxfam and Fourth World in Ireland and community organizations in Spain.
  • Volunteer for the PBI Guatemala Project in 2008-2009.
  • Member of PBI Italy.
  • currently working for the Copenhagen Initiative for Central America and Mexico (CIFCA) in Brussels.

Cristina Barbeito (Spain) - Coordinator

  • Lived in Guatemala from 2002 to 2005 where she became familiar with the work of PBI in the country.
  • As a legal professional, she has a great deal of training in international human rights.
  • Masters in 'Fundamental Rights' from the University of Carlos III in Madrid between 2001-2002
  • Masters Degree in Human Rights from the University of Rafael Landívar (URL, Guatemala City) between 2002-2004.
  • Worked in Guatemala with 'Rights Action' and was a volunteer in the office of Spanish NGO Acsur Las Segovias. She has also worked as a consultant on the issue of Justice in the Round Table dialogues of the PNUD (2003-2004).
  • Part of the PBI project committee since May 2008.
  • Coordinator of the PBI Guatemala Project since November 2008.


Kerstin Reemtsma (Germany) - Representative to the European Union

  • Worked in programms with Guatemalan refugees in Mexico 1989-93.
  • Preparation of work delegations to contruct development programms of the Communities of Population in Resistence, CPR-Ixcán and CPR-Sierra, 1993-97.
  • Observador of the negociations of the CPR Sierra team with the Guatemalan government, 1993-97.
  • Coordinator of different projects of education and health in the CPR communities, 1994-99.
  • Consultant for various projects in the Ixil area, 2000-02.
